This Old House

Long shot from the alfalfa field

Actually, although people can see our house from the road, they can't see it up this close (a good thing, I know) because it's quite far from the road and there are lots of trees and a beautiful hill of alfalfa and dandelions in the way. If it looks like Ma and Pa Kettle's house, that's because it's a long wrap-around porch with table and chairs at one end, a slate blackboard for kids to draw on when they're visiting, a little sunrise window at the landing of our stairway (which still strikes me as a miracle that it survived our kids' childhood), a wicker bench, a bay window, and the other end that is screened in. I love it. And I have loved it for 28 years. But even more than the house, I love that alfalfa field.

You might also notice that I've got a new header - at least for now. I took this photo yesterday. I love this time of year, probably especially because our winters are way too long and cold, but when May rolls around, that's when springtime comes to Wisconsin. It's not March or April as some foolishly expect, but May when spring arrives here in the NW region of the state. So the new header shows you one of the things that delights me about our state, and that's the beauty of cows out on pasture after they've been cooped up all winter. And you can see that we live in rolling hills and that there are lots of trees here. This is Wisconsin, and it's a beautiful state.

I took this photo last May, but it looks just the same now.
The alfalfa (and dandelion) field

Praise God for the beauty of His Creation
and that winter only seems like it lasts forever.

I really like those houses and their bright colors in the last shot. your house is my dream house, exactly.. so glad you showed the whole house, I have seen pieces and new I would love it and now I KNOW I love it. views of barns and cows and fields of flowers are another thing I would love and NO NEIGHBORS... my most coveted thing to have.

I love the house and the field. The thing I love about spring is it reminds me of my grandmother. She loved tending flowers in her yard and there was such a burst of vibrant color every spring. How nice it must be to live so far away from the road and neighbors. Nearly perfect, I'd say. Have a wonderful Mother's Day weekend!

I so happily could live in and care for your house...what a lovely home. I much prefer old homes then a new one....just saying, smiles.

A very Happy Mothers Day to you, Judy.

I thought of my mom reading this post. Wisconsin does have cold winters, but it's beautiful big woods, the shores by the lakes, field of dreams:), ok, livestock, flowers, can go on and on.
Colby is where my mom was born and raised, I would give anything to whisk her there and we can explore her family town.
Have a wonderful Mother's Day,

For me, there is nothing like an older home. The history, nooks/crannies, and oddities are all the things I love.

I noticed the lovely header right away, Judy! So bucolic, my friend. And the Oxford photo is a beauty as well. Have a Happy Mother's Day. ♥

Spring happened here a while back, but it's still trying to linger, thank God! Like your Winters, our Summers tend to stay around far too long after we're tired of them!
Your photos today are beautiful. I can imagine how happy the cattle must be to enjoy fresh fields again!

Your home is beautiful. My absolute favorite kind of house has a big wrap around porch on it, so there you have it. I'm still a country girl at heart and really could be very happy with an alfalfa field, rolling hills, a big ol' barn and one of those wrap around porches.

Your home is so charming all nestled into the hill that way. A wrap-around porch is swoon-worthy and gives you that wonderful extra space for living and entertaining in spring, summer, and fall. Beautiful header! Beautiful corner of the world... Is it worth the long months of winter?

Beautiful new header, Judy! Your home is so very full of charm. And, oh, the alfalfa. I remember loving to munch on bites when we would be moving the irrigation lines (necessary in West Texas). Tastes like fresh green beans. And, the smell of the hay... heavenly. Wishing you a wonderful weekend and Happy Mother's Day, Judy. blessings ~ tanna

Your home is beautiful and charming. I do love a wraparound porch! And your pastoral surroundings are charming as well. No wonder you love Wisconsin . . . in spite of the winters.

Judy, I love your house, especially that wrap-around porch that's screened-in on one end. And the alfalfa field. We were surrounded by alfalfa fields during my early childhood, so just the smell of alfalfa gets me every time.

Your house looks quaint and welcoming with the front porch. I wish they were still put on houses but when people moved to the backyard for entertaining, back decks became popular. Can't do a lot of people watching from the back! lol
The new header is nice, a snippet of country life. I sure hope the farms in our area don't disappear to vast housing subdivisions. This already happened to the town where hubby and I grew up and now it's like a big metropolis to which we seldom visit.
Hope you had a nice Mother's Day Judy.
